Did you know 81% of Aussies are worried about plastic use globally, and 63% are concerned about it right in their own homes? More and more households are realising that reducing our plastic footprint isn’t just about personal change; it’s about contributing to a global solution.
Australian homes are part of a growing wave of conscious consumers who believe in preserving a greener and cleaner planet for future generations.
And we have some breaking news on the topic of plastic.
As of 1st September 2024, both states of SA and WA are taking a huge step forward in the fight against plastic pollution by enforcing single-use plastic bans. This is a fantastic leap forward for our environment, wildlife, and future generations.
Plastic Ban Update: What’s Changing?
These bans are part of a broader movement across Australia to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. From straws to cutlery, stirrers to polystyrene food containers, a whole array of single-use plastic items will be no more. This initiative curbs pollution and encourages us all to adopt more sustainable habits in our everyday lives.
What single-use plastic products will be banned?
South Australia
SA is making steady progress under the Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) Act 2020. Each year from 2021 to 2025, new plastic bans are being introduced. Starting September 1, 2024, these plastic items will be banned:
- Thick supermarket or boutique-style plastic bags, and plastic barrier bags for unpackaged produce, nuts, and confectionery. Compostable bags certified by Australian Standards are exempt.
- EPS consumer food and beverage containers, including gelato containers and cake boxes.
- Plastic food bag tags, plastic confetti, and plastic balloon sticks or ties.
- Single-use plastic beverage containers and their attachments, like lids and plugs. Compostable cups and lids certified by Australian Standards are exempt.
- Single-use plastic food containers, including bowls, cups, containers, and trays with lids for takeaway food. Compostable containers certified by Australian Standards are exempt.
Western Australia
Western Australia's Plan for Plastics is rolling out in two stages. Stage 1 is done, setting up the basics. Now, they are moving on to Stage 2, which started in 2023, focusing on more single-use plastic items.
- Produce bags for fruits and vegetables, except those certified as compostable by Australian standards.
- Lids for bowls, trays, plates, and takeaway food containers
- Lids or lidded foodware made mainly from paper or fibre with a plastic or bioplastic coating are exempt if they meet Australian composting standards.

What You Can Do
We know that our Euca community is passionate about sustainability, and we’re here to help you make the transition to a plastic-free lifestyle as smooth as possible. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Swap out single-use plastics for reusable alternatives. Think stainless steel straws, cloth shopping bags, and glass containers.
- Reduce packaging waste by purchasing Euca products in larger quantities. Refill into smaller containers when you buy in bulk. This way, you’ll consume less packaging waste. Our bulk options are not only eco-friendly but also more economical.
- Make sure you’re recycling your Euca packaging properly. Our eco boxes and cardboard scoops are fully recyclable, so pop them in your recycling bin when you’re done.
- Share your sustainable practices with friends and family. The more people we get on board, the bigger impact we can make!
