It is the norm for powder laundry detergent products to include a plastic scoop to measure the amount needed for an average cycle. Handy, right? But what happens to these single use laundry scoops once we’re finished with them? The majority will end up in the bin unfortunately.
It is the norm for powder laundry detergent products to include a plastic scoop to measure the amount needed for an average cycle. Handy, right? But what happens to these single use laundry scoops once we’re finished with them? The majority will end up in the bin unfortunately. When you think about how much detergent your household goes through every year, you’ll realise that all of these scoops add up pretty quickly. Clearly, this is not an environmentally viable system. Single use items in general are huge contributors to the global waste crisis, most of which are no more than convenience products that we can easily live without. There is usually always a more sustainable alternative, e.g. metal straws and reusable water bottles. But what’s the plan B for detergent scoops? A lot of innovations have been developed in a bid for a convenient yet environmentally friendly replacement for plastic scoops. These range from changing the components of the scoop to integrating the scoop into the packaging itself. But sadly, none of these have been adopted on a wide scale as of yet.
Introducing: Euca’s Eco Scoop
At Euca, we are on an eco-friendly mission. That’s why we’re exploring the possibility of using a non-plastic scoop for our powder detergents. Our proposed alternative is called the eco scoop and is made of biodegradable cardboard. This flat-packed laundry scoop simply needs to be folded into shape and it is ready for use. Although we haven’t rolled it out fully yet, stay tuned as we’re currently in testing phases. We hope that other companies, too, begin to reconsider their impact on the environment. Small changes add up, and collectively we have the power to change the future. By and large, we should be making a conscious effort to reduce our plastic consumption. Plastic is non-biodegradable and takes years to break down naturally. This has already caused extreme devastation across many eco-systems, including the oceans where turtles and other endangered marine wildlife become entangled in floating plastic, or choke on it having mistaken it as food. Australia has already taken some steps towards positive change, having begun to phase out plastic shopping bags across the country. This means you can no longer pick up a free lightweight bag at the supermarket – you’ll have to purchase a larger reusable bag for a small price. South Australia is set to roll out a single-use plastic ban in March of this year, which would include straws and cutlery. It looks like Queensland is going to follow suit, and hopefully it won’t be long until these laws are in place on a national scale. So, what do you do with your laundry scoops in the meantime? Before you dispose of them, consider whether they can be upcycled. Once washed, they can be used as a scoop for typically bulk-bought products, like pet food or porridge oats. You can also use them for baking ingredients like flour and sugar to save you having to use a scale. Here’s a fun thread on more ideas on how to use your old scoops before discarding them.
